ATTACKED BY A HAWK.

Frightful Mutilation oi a Child,

William Horv, living in Greenville, Pennsylvania, shot a large hawk recently. The shot broke one of its wings and Horn captured bhe hawk alive. He took ifc home and fcied ib by one leg to fche leg of a table in his kitchen while ho rigged up a cage fco keep ib in. Mrs Horn was busy in the kitchen, and her eight-months-old baby was creeping about the floor. The baby was attracted by tha appearance of the hawk in the corner, and crept up to it unobserved by its mother, who suddenly heard her child screaming in agony. Turning around, Mrs Horn saw tho child lying on its back on the floor, whilo the hawk was on top of it tearing at the baby's face and breast with its talons and beak. Mrs Horn ran to the rescue of her child, and in getting ib away from the hawk her right hand was gashed to the bone by a blow from one of the hawk's claws. The flesh on the baby's face was torn away on ono cheek until the bones wore exposed. One eye was gouged out, and the under lip nearly sevoretl from the face. The child's breast was also badly lacerated. The hawk would have killed tho child but for its prompt rescue by its mother. The ugly bird was takon out ana shot. The child's injuries may prove fatal.
