SALE OF THE KAWAU.

Tins morning at 11.30, at the offices of Mr W. J. Napier, solicitor for Sir George Grey, the legal formalities were executed which passed the island of Kawau finally out of the hands of Sir George and vested the property in Mrs Eliza Rutherford Thomson, wife of Mr James Thomson, of Lusatia Park, Woori Yalloak, in the colony of Victoria. The consideration was £12,000, of which a cheque for £3,000 was handed to Mr Napier by Mr Samuel Jackson (Jackson and Russell), who is acting as Mrs Thomson's solicitor. The remaining £9,000 remains on mortgage at 5 per cent, per annum. By the terms of the mortgage deed (a very elaborate document drawn by Mr Napier), the island is to be preserved in its present state of cultivation, and all trees and plants planted by Sir George are to be preserved. Thus has an event taken place which from the circumstances may well be regarded as a historic incident in the annals of New Zealand.
