The folbwiog description of » rid© from New York to Chicago on " Pennsylvania Limited" is copied from the "Pall Mall Gazette": "The daily whizzer" loaves New York every morning Ab 9 o'clock and covers the thousand miles to Chicago in twenty-five houre. When the train was firefc put on the American public was incredulous of tiho advertised time to be oecnpied in the journey, Jinti the train ran with empty scats for several Weeks. With that alerfc sense of advertiSemenfc , which characterises tne American mind the Pennsylvania Railroad Company announced that they would refund five dollars to every passenger having a through ticket if tho train arrived at the depots in either city over fifteen minutes late. The offer was attractive to the American, who is essentially a grumbler, and likes the excitement of a race against time. When it wafe found that the railroad cotnpany kept to its engagements and handed five dollars to delated travelled the train rapidly filled, and from that moment it proved a success. For two yeafs the financial inducement was offered, and only when the train had become faftrcd fchtotierhoufc tho States for its regularity and lti*tfry was the advertisement withdrawn.
