ANOTHER CANING CASE.

Another complaint has been made to the Newton East School Committee of excessive punishment by the Rev. Mr Coates, headmaster. It was alleged that a lad named Gordon, whose parents reside in Newton, was yesterday afternoon sent before Mr Coates by one of the lady teachers, in consequence of disobedience. The head-master gave the lad two strokes on the hand with his cane, and supplemented these with a couple of strokes on the thigh. The lad went home and complained to his father, who in turn brought the matter under the notice of Mr Jenkins, Chairman of Committee, who has promised to make the necessary inquiries. The Rev. Mr Coates admits having punished the boy Gordon as indicated, bub denies that he used any undue severity. The matter will no doubt receive due attention at the hands of the School Committee.
