BOARD OF EDUCATION.
_|tB usual meeting of the above was held yesterday afternoon at the offices of the Board, Victoria Arcade. Present: Messrs S. Luke (Chairman), J. W. Carr, J. M. Lennox, J. Upton, R. Udy and D. Goldie. Chairman's Report.—The report of the chairman was read and adopted. It merely dealt with routine matters. Readjustment of Inspectors' Districts. —The inspectors reported as follows with regard to the readjustment of districts for inspection : —" We recommend the following changes in the distribution of schools for thepurposeof inspection and examination —(1) Otahuhu, Otara, Woodside, Tamaki East, Papakura, and Papakura Valley to be in the central division. (2) Mercury Bay, Tairua, Whangapowa-, Whatawhata,andthe Raglan group to be in the Southern division. (3) Titirangi, Waikotniti, Henderson, Chelsea, and Northcote to be in the Northern division, — The report was adopted. Devospotit.—£4s was granted for necessary repairs.
Kajio.— An application for the expendi ture of £40 on the teachers house was re ferred to Mr Allrighfc.
Oxford. —An application for a school was made for tins district. They offered to contribute £25 and yive 5 acres of land for a site. There are 26 children. On the motion of Mr Carr ib was resolved to call for plans and specifications and to ask the people to convey land and forward the subscription. Quarterly Adjustment of Salaries.— Mr Cooper said that the salaries for the present quarter should be made in consideration 'of their reduced income. It meant a payment of about £5,000 per month.—Mr Luke said that it Avas only the head teachers' salaries they proposed to deal with. Mr Cooper said that head teachers! must suffer with the others. It would be man:fest!y unjust to pay the head teachers' salaries, and commence the retrenchment on the assistants and pupil teachers. He was not prepared to move that as the salaries decreased in amount so should the percentage of the iednction. Mr Goldie pointed oub that the head teachers would also bo affected immediately by the adoption of the strict working average. He suggested that tho matter shonld be referred to tho Retrench ment Committee to bring forward some comprehensive scheme. — Mr Rice snid thatsthe strict average would come into operation on the 31st of March.—■ On the motion of Mr Carr it was resolved to pass the salaries as at present until the end of January. Ail other applications Were deferred for the present.
Free Ni^jit School. —Mr Newton was the onlVjgpplicani, for fcho position of teacher of theflßree Night School, Mr Lillington having It was decided to advertise for a teacher, Mi* Draffin meanwhile to carry on the school The matter of salary was referred to' the Committee.
Otara School. —Mr Sumner was ap pointed head-master of the above school.
