Commissioner {Howard, of the Salvation Army, states that officers will be shortly told off for duty amongst the natives. There are violent folks about Invercargill, A youth has been convicted of stabbing a Japanese in the street, and Martin Johnson has been found guilty of threatening to do bodily harm. Sentence deferred in both cases. A lad named William Adams, who was injured by being jammed between the buffers of railway trucks at Petone on Monday, has died from his injuries. Mr Justice. Richmond has reserved judgemnt in the case brought by the Maoris of Ngatikawhata hapu against the "white chief," Alexander McDonald. Letters have been received from the principal exhibitors at the Adelaide Exhibition expressing their willingness to send exhibits to Dunedin if an exhibition is held next year. It is pointed out by a correspondent that) a mixture of 1 lb of Paris green to 100 gallons of water is top,, strong, for though it will destroy the eodliri moth, it will also destroy pears. Apples do not appear to be injured by it, however. At a meeting of Dunedin University Council yesterday it was stated in the discussion on the proposal to extend classrooms that it would be necessary to reduce the salaries of the professors and others, aa the revenue would be diminished by £2,000 or £3,000. During the next two years the Wajtaki endowment alone, it is estimated, will decrease by £1,500.
