POLICE COURT.-THIS DAY.

(Before Messrs H. Wilding and F. Battley,

. J.P.'s.) . Drunkenness.— One person was fined 5a and costs for a first offence.—Alo Berg was fined 10s or 48 hours for a second offence, and Andrew Williamson was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for habitual drunkenness.

Larceny.—William Elder was charged with drunkenness and with the larceny of a coat valued at 10s, the property of James Williams, on the 7th inst.—Prisoner pleaded guilty. He had recorded against him 18 previous convictions for durnkenness, 12 for larceny, and one for indecent exposure, and for the present offence he was ordered six months' imprisonment.

Larceny as a Bailee.—James Fowler was charged with larceny as a bailee of a handcarfc, valued at £4'los, the property of James Bevege, on the 20th inst.—James Bevege, storekeeper, of Cook-street, deposed that on the 7th October last he let the prisoner have a handcart on hire, at 3s 6d per week, and to be returned at the end of any week when required. Prisoner paid for one week, and subsequently both he and the truck disappeared. On October 22nd prisoner wrote stating that he would pay the amount due. Prisoner had no authority to dispose of the handcart. — Bernard Goldwater, pawnbroker, Newton, deposed that on the 20th October last that prisoner pawned a handcart for 13s.—Detective Hughes gave evidence as to the recovery of the handcart, and arrest of the prisonei*, who was committed to stand his trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court.—Bail was allowed —self in £50 and two others of £25 each.

D. F. Evans will sell at his auction mart to-morrow, Wednesday, at noon, an unfinished house and freehold allotment) 40 x 132, situated in Surrey-street. The house is built on brick foundation, and could i be finished for a small sum. This is a good [ chance for a working man, as the place will, be sold without reserve.
