THE PERFUMERY RECIPEBOOK.
(To the Editor.) era-Some little time ago considerable prominence was given in your columns to an action, Pieese v. Barnett, wherein the plaintiff sued criminally fep the recovery of a certain formula book, &c. Mr Piesse was at the time, and previously thereto, unuu. engagement to us to manufacture perfumes, and our name appeared in the matter Although no evidence was produced that wo had anything to gain by the successful issue of the caso, tho presiding justice thought fit to assume that we had, and availed himself of his brief authority to pass certain remarks reflecting discredit on our firm. The case was quasheri, but Mr Piesse immediately afterwards instituted • civil proceedings for the recovery of his goods. We, trusting that the matter might still bo fully ventilated in CouU't, refrained from engaging in » wordy warfo.ro in the newspapers, more espe-cialiy a 9 in common justice to both parties, wo considered that no action to influence cither one way or the other should bo taken before the caso was heard. Mr .barnett, however, in the meantime, ietfc Auckland before the civil writ coula tie served. As the affair died a natural death, we simply allowed it to drop, and for our part would have been content to > .consign it to a merciful oblivion, particu- j ferly°as the slanderous report_ obtained little or no credence from our clients. In fact, our known standing enabled us to safely treat the calumnies with contempt. By last 'Frisco mail, however, we notice that fcho caso has attracted attention m tho leading English Drug paper, " Ihe ChomißtJ and Druggist/ of October Ist, a copy of which wo .forward tor your perusal. It must be evident to all that Messrs Piesse and Lubin were the parties most interested in tho matticr, and you will observe that they speak of our conduct as fair and straightforward. As we havo not written them on tho subject, their statement may be regarded as strictly impartial. Wo presume that they heard from their late partner and other relations in the colony, as well as from Mr Barnett and hiss friends. Let us add that wo could, at any time, havo disproved any personal object to be gained if Mr Piesse had succeeded in recovering possession of tho book, as, from tho very commencement of that gentleman's engagement, wo were in possession of conies of all the principal formula?; and we afso wish to say that an entirely fictitious value has been attached to the book, as in tho hands of any but an experienced and practical man liko Mr Picsao it would bo comparatively useless.—Wβ are, dear air, yours faithfully, Shari,a.m> & Co.
