Exercise for Girls.
The effects of exercise uppn growing girls are well shown by a comparison recently made in America. The height and weight of 350 female pupils of a Brooklyn school, where gymnastic exercises are regularly practised, were compared with those of 10,000 Boston school girls taken at random, with the following result:
From these figures it appears that the girls who had gymnastic exercise regularly were from one and one-half to six inches taller, and from thirteen to eighteen pounds heavier, than those of similar ages who had not. There may be some natural difference between Brooklyn and Boston girls in these respects, and the comparison would be somewhat more satisfactory if it had reference to pupils in the same city. However, it may be taken as indicating the benefits resulting from systematic physical culture, and as emphasizing the importance of attention to muscle as well as mind in the education of the young".
