Chinese Immigration.
The influx of Chinese to this and the neighbouring colonies was discussed at a public meeting held in the Hatham Town Hall on September 17. About 300 persons were rjresent. AH the speakers agreed that early action should be taken to prevent the Chinese coming in any numbers to Australia. Mr Harwood referred to the evil effects which the influx of Chinese into the United States has produced amongst the working classes, and Mr Laurens pointed out that the question could now be easily dealt wibh, bub if postponed until the Chinese were more numeous the difliculby of dealing wibh them would be greater than was presented by the rabbit plague. Where the rabbite come the sheep starve, and where the Chinamen come -the white working men will have to starve, said Mr Laurens. Resolutions were carried declaring the presence of Chinese to be a menace and a peril to the whole of tho industrial classes ; that any further influx should be prevented; that those already here should be placed under proper supervision.
