College and Grammar School Board.

A meeting of the Board of Governors of the Auckland College and Gram* mar School was held yesterday, when the following members were present : — Sir G. M. O'Rorke (Chairman) Messrs Upton Lennox, Luke, Aickin, Colonel Haul" tain, and the Rev. C. M. Nelson.

Correspondence. — The letters received weie read and dealt with as follows :—From Mr C. A. Bourne, head-master of the Grammar School, reporting the progress of the boys receiving free tuition at the school. He referred to the work done as satisfactory on the whole, but mentioned as a singular fact that; the scholars of 1885— the last under the old system of unlimited age—were the least promising within his experience. The letter was received. From Mr Bourne, asking on behalf of the Grammar School Cricket Club that the Board would defray the expense of maintaining practice wickets in the Domain during the forthcoming cricket season.—Resolved that £10 be contributed. Front Mr Carson, Science Master at the Frea Night School, reporting progress. He mentioned that a large percentage of the science pupils were over 21 years of age. Mr Carson also suggested that the Board of Education be requested to appoint an honorary assistant, who would prepare the appailatus for his experiments in the classes.—■ The last matter was referred to a committee consisting of the Chairman, Col. Haultain, Messrs Luke and Lennox.

Grammar School Rolls. — The headmaster submitted the rolls for the past) term. A considerable falling off in attendance was noticed. This resulted in a discussion as to the efficiency of the school. —It was ultimately resolved, on the motion of Mr Luke, '' That a committee conaJ.stincr of the Chairman, Messrs Aickin, Lennox and the mover, confer with the headmaster of the Grammar School with a view to taking steps to popularise the institution."
