City West.
St. James's Hall, Wellington-street, was the appointed polling-place for this electorate, and up till seven o'clock, when the doors were closed, the hall was thronged. The rain came down very heavily at that time and the crowd dispersed, and when at ten minutes to eight Mr Thomas Cotter, the Returning Officer, declared the poll there were very few present. The result created some surprise, as Mr Shera's Committee considered that they had polled close on a thousand of their promises and Mr Morrison's Committee were of opinion that their candidate's votes would amount to 500. None of the candidates were present at the declaration, and after cheering the result the few spectators dispersed. Mr Cotter declared the result of the polling to be :— Goldie 717 Shera ... 523 Morrison 209 Majority for Goldie ... 194 Informal, 7.
