Proposed Holiday on Polling Day.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —As we are now approaching the polling day, would it not be advisable to induce the Mayor to proclaim a public holiday, as it would _ then give the employees time to attend in the interest of their candidates, and prevent any undue influence being exercised by the employer.—Yours, etc., Working Man.
[lii this connection we may mention that we have reason to believe that there is not the slightest chance of the Mayor interfering with the matter. He has already replied in the negative to two deputations who waited upon him, to request that he should declare a public holiday on polling day, and has also answered similarly to a letter from the Shop Assistants' Association. His Worshipthinks that the extension of the hours of polling affords plenty of time to electors to record their votes, and moreover considers that the granting of a public holiday on such an occasion might have a tendency to cause turbulence. —Ed. E.S.)
