DEATH OF MR J.C. SHARLAND.

We regret to have to announce to-day the death of James Cragg Sharland, the founder of the well-known firm of J. C. Sharland and Co., of this city. The deceased gentleman had been in poor health for some months back, but his malady, though painful, did not necessitate his taking to bed till about a week ago. He was attended by Dr. Haines, who did all that medical skill could suggest for the relief of the sufferer and the cure of the disease; but. despite this and the attention of friends, he succumbed to the Destroyer, and passed away peacefully about four o'cloak this morning. Mr Sharland is survived by his widow, four sons, and four daughters. Two of the sons and three of the daughters aie married. Tbe deceased had been a resident of New Zealand for many years, having been one of the earliest settlers in Tarabaki district; where for some time he took a prominent part in public affairs, and was known and esteemed for his genial hospitality. Being of a very social disposition, and possessed of a well-cultured mind, he made hosts of friends, more especially in the earlier days, and in Auckland he pursued the same felicitous career that he had entered upon. Ho started here the business in Shortland-street, as chemists and druggists, which has grown into one of the largest manufacturing concerns—his large experience in the business contributing not a little to its success. Before his health failed, Mr Sharland took an active interest in all local commercial matters. His mourning relatives and wide circle of friends will be cheered by the sympathy of the public generally. Mr Sharland was 08 years of age, and the disease from which he suffered was prostatis, or inflammation of the prostate gland. His remains are to be interred in the Symonds-street Cemetery to-morrow (Sunday), the funeral cortege leaving his late residence in Princes-street at 3 p.m.
