At the meeting of the Harbour Board to* •totoaw tenders for coal, carting timber? ship chandlery and iron and brass work wil be considered. Mr Shearman, who is to succeed Mr J. B. Thomson in the charge of the Auckland Police District, is one of the oldest inspectors in the colony, and at one time it was thought likely that he would succeed the late Lieutenant-Colonel Reader as Commissioner of "Police. He was, however, passed over, and Major Gudgeon reserved the coveted appointment. It is no.;doubt with the object of avoiding friction that Mr Shearman is to be removed from Wellington. It was rumoured in Wellington some months ago that Mr Inspector Pai-dy will probably be transferred to Auckland. We may add that very general regret is expressed at the contemplated removal of Mr Thomson, although the transfer is tinquestionably promotion for that gentleman,- and-an evidence of the confidence the authorities have in him. Mr Thompson is popular both with his eubordiantes and the public. At St. Benedicts yesterday, eleven o'clock mass was celebrated by Rev.
