FIRE IN MOUNT EDEN ROAD.

'■'" Extensive' 'damage.

This morning, between 12 and 1 o'clock, a destructive fire took place in Mount Eden Road,' near'the'top of Symond-street, resulting.inthe total destruction of the Eden Hall, a cottage adjoining, and a shop with dwell-ing-house ■ attached. > .The block belonged to Mr W. N.. Henderson, who resided in the, cottage that has been destroyed.! It would seem that the fire originated in the shop or dwelling. The shop was occupied by Mr, Donaldson, bootmaker, who resides in Gaol Road and was, therefore, nofc on the premises at, the time ' of. the outbreak. The dwelling-house attacked was empty, but was let to a tenant who intended entering next week; Mrs Henderson was awakened by theglare of the fire, but as the flames were by that time breaking through the roof of Donaldson's shop, it was impossible .either tp find' the origin of the outbreak or to save the buildings from destruction. The alarm was promptly given and the Kyber contingent of the fire brigade were at once •on the spot, followed later on by the Auckland Fire Brigade under Superintendent Hughes and the Salvage Corps under Captain Field. It was only1 by' strenuous' efforts that the fire was prevented from spreading to three, shops with dwelling houses attached in immediate contiguity to the block destroyed. The amount of loss by the fire is said td exceed Ll,ooo,*but this is mostly covered by insurance. Mr Henderson had the block insured for L 1,400, that amount' including £500 in the Royal and £250 in the Norwich Union office. The shop destroyed and the shop next it on the eastern side, which, was damaged to the extent of about £25, were insured in the South, British'; Office for; £125 on. each, half of which amounts were reinsured. ■: ■
