DEATH OF MR S. E. HUGHES.

We regret to have to announce the dsath of Mr Stephen Edward Hughes (the senior partner of the firm of Hughes and George, solicitors), at his residence at-Shelly Beach Road, this morning, at ten o'clock. The, deceased gentleman first saw New Zealand about the year 1841, when, as paymaster's clerk, he visited this country in H.M.S. Hagard, being present at the battle of .Kohiraraka, in-.which he served as a volunteer. Mr Hughes was the only holder of the Imperial Naval War Medal in New Zealand. After gettingmaiTied upon his return to England, Mr Hughes again came to New Zealand, this time in the Clara, when he was employed by the late Mr David Nr.than for a short time. He afterwards was clerk to the Provincial Council for many years, after which he turned his attention to literary work and was employed upon the staff of the Daily Southern Cross newspaper. Mr Hughes afterwards studied for the law under Sic late Mr W.Bracey Mr W. Hesketh, studying with him during the latter part of the time, and finally was admitted to the bar- in 1862. Mr George, who married one of Mr Hughes's daughters, joined him in 1876, since which the business has been carried on under the name of Hughes and George. The deceased gentleman last attended the office on the Wednesday before Good Friday, since which he visited the Waikafco (on business connected with his son, Mr A. G. Hughes, who is now studying law with the firm). Paralysis, .which was the cause of Mr Hughes's death, first attacked him 13 months ago at his residence: in Ponsonby, a second fit seizing him whilst in the Waikato on Good Friday night; the last and fatal attack being at 10 o'clock last night, i Mr Hughes is well-known as the promoter of many local companies, was a prominent member of the Standing Committee of the Anglican Diocesan Synod. He was also one of the mosti important Masons in Auckland, being1' Past Master of the Ara Lodge. We understand that at the deceased gentleman's request. he will be accorded a full Masonic funeral. Mr Hughes, who has always been one of our most respected and active, business men, will be; much ! missed in Auckland. He leaves aj widowtwo sons (married and living in Auckland), and three ; daughters,, one married W Mr George. . The funeral will take place, on!
