HEALTH ITEMS.

Tub Sanitary Inspector has had the following cases of fever reported to him today :— One caee scarlot fever, Woetetreot, New. ton ; one case of scarlet fever, Symondsstreot; one caso of typhoid fevor, Somerset Placo; and one case of typhoid fever in Claremont • street. With regard to the spread of contagious diseases, the Town Clerk (Mr P. A. Phillips), as Secretary of tbe Board of Health, has written to Mr Biss, tho Postmaster stating that the Health Officer had reported that ono of tho Postoffice clerks (Mr Arthur Clarke,) who was suffering from scarlet foyer, had returned to liia duties within the prescribed time of 42 days, and that iv coasequence of this action danger to the public generally was caused by handling papers, etc. Besides which, the clerk rendered himsolf liable to a heavy penalty if the Board wished to ordor that procoedinpts should be taken against him. It was aleo suggested that the clerk should be relieved frern duty. Mr Biss replied, stating he had just relieved Clarke until his return should be permitted by the Health Officer. He also stated that Clarke had, howover, been absent from liia duties from February 15th, the date on which he lirst took ill, until the 14th of March, also that his illness was of a very mild description.

The new fever wards for the Hospital are now fast approaching completion, having been pushed forward with a promptitude that epeaks well for the energy of the contractor, Mr Thompson.
