SEAMEN'S STRIKE.
A blight misunderstanding appears to havo arisen botween Captain Johnson (tnastor) and the crew of the Northern C'o.'s steamer GlenolgThe crew objected to any compulsion being used with reference to the keeping of a watch overnight whilst in port, because they wcro m the habit of arranging this matter amongst themselves, and they were not allowed, as on the Union steamers, any " off time " in consideration of (having to keep watch in port. lhe men assert that it was not so much that they were required to keep watch in port, but the arbitrary manner o£ Captain Johnson that they took objection to. They spoke their minds o^h^cT Veil- rS?£ M Seaman's Union and the Glenelg had to ship non-union men in their stead before leaving for Whangarei last night. Mr Coutts, manager for the Northern Company, and Mr Ellison, secretary of the Seamen's Union, met this morning and talked the matter over. Air Ellison stated his case in terms similar to those used above, and Mr CoutU said that he was informed differently by Captain Johnson, who had asserted that the crew insisted upon leaving the steameratop.m, when in port. At aU events the cause of dispute seemed so slight that Mr Coutts and Mr Klhson cumo to tho conclusion thatjan amicable arrangement could easily be arrived at o,i the return of Uip Glcneljr. In the meantime the Union will take no further action, and tho crews on tho Northern steamers generally are not desirous of having any strike. _____^_____
