Ho hud visitbl tho island whore Bishop I'atteson was killed, had been well rocbived, and found.tho Paitoson cross to bo woll cared for. Bishop Solwyn oxprcssed a four that tho French would annex Banka'a Island as woll as tho Now Hobiidos.

Tho motion providod for tho appoiutmont of a subcommittee, with whom tho Bishop should consult before making thoso appointments. To thia Rev. Mr Gould had movod an rfmendmont that tho Standing Committee bo a committeo of advice. Archdoacon Mdunsell spoke strongly in favour of this proposal, but at' tho samo time said ho was prepared to accept Mr Could's araondmont. Ho complaitiod that thoy were hamporcd by having their President presiding at tho Council, and assorted that freedom of epooch was not permitted, as ovidoncod by the action of the Bishop in putting down Archdoacon Clarke and Rev. Mr Burrows last Friday. Both gontlemon referred to eaid they had no complaint to make, that thoy had stated all thoy wished to, and that thoy wero treated with consideration by tho Bishop. The Row Archdoacon thon proceodod to protest against tho custom pursued by tho Bishop in making appointments by "inherent right" without consultingthepeople. Only amongst poorer congregations is this right claimed, and ho felt bound to say that in a democratic country liko New Zonland tho practico would not long bo toloratod. Tho people might stand thoso things now, but by-and-byo thoy would robol, and ask whore was Iho inherent right to do theso things. Tho rich wero allowed the powor of appointing thoir clorgymon, but tho poor wore not. Country parishes wero ontitlod to tho samo rights ns thoir brethren in tho town. The Bishop considered that Archdeacon Maunsell had been disrespectful in leaving it to bo understood that ho had suppressed a portion of tho truth, So far as Te Awamutu was concerned, ho had boon live months waiting for a rocommondation from tho people. If tho Synod sat by quiotly and allowed him to bo insulted, ho would rosign.— Mr Crispo said it was quite timo to bring this matter forward when tho country peoplo do ired it. Dr. Purchns said he and others had listened with tho greatest pain to the spirit of Dr. Maunsell's speech, and ho felt that if any other minister had given utterance to euch opinions ho would not have been listened to. — A motion by Dr. Purctun that tho Synod proceed to tho next business was lost on division.— Aftor somo fuithor discussion, nn amendment was proposed and negatived, and Mr Gould's resolution wns thon put with tho following result :—Ayes : Clergy. 10; laity,'2o.
