The Evening Star: WITH WHICH ARE INCORPORATED The Evening News, Morning News, and Echo.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10. 1886.
Tor the cause that lacks assistance, For the wrong that needs resistance, For the future in the distance, And the good that we can do.
War preparat ons ate being pushed on throughout Europe, but wo think it probable that Russia will rest satisfied for tho present with having compelled Prince Alexander to abdicate, and asserted the Czar's right of interposition in Bulgarian affairs. The mail despatches shew that the British press is disposed to treat the Eastern question as one that concerns Austria chiefly ; but there is great activity at Chatham, consequent upon the receipt of unexpected orders to complete the men-of war in course of construction. An attempt was made to arouse the jealousy of the Porte and France against England over the Egyptian question. It is asserted that £30,000 were remitted to Moukhtar Pasha to work up local discontent against the English occupation. The " Republiquo Francaiso " published a telegram declaring that England meditated proclaiming Egypt a British possession ; but official assurances to the contrary having been given, the ruse failed in its object. The enthusiastic reception of Princo Alexander in Germany proved that the popular feeling is antagonistic to the diplqpnatic policy of the Government, and Russia cannot therefore count upon more than the neutrality of her powerful neighbour in any move southwards.
The other items of mail news, especially the details of the disastrous earthquakes at Charlestown are very interesting, and will befoundreported in extenso in other columns.
