NEWTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tkf. usual meeting of the above body was held last evening, in the Council Office Great North Road. Present: The Mayo' (R. T. Warnock), and Councillors Leg Prime, Riggs, Billington, laing, Ambury* Buckley, Hastings, and Morrison.

Dunne,applying to have their names put on the burgess roll, thoy havine purchased sections in the borough : AppH! cations granted.—From a number of re*i". dents in Arch Hill, complaining of the nuisance caused by the smoke and effluvia from tho brickworks in the Great North Road, the result of the low chimneys. It o« decided to forward the loftor to the Arch Hill Board.—From the Town Clork, forwarding a copy of resolu. tion passed at the last meoting of the City Council, viz. :— " That the boundary road of tho several districts be made by authority of each district, on the prior approval of tho work by this Council, and of the; plans and specifications to bo submitted " A second letter was also received from the Town Clerk, acknowledging receipt of the petition re. Cox's Creek briugo, and informing tho Newton Borough Council that the City Council had nothing to do with the bridge, and suggesting that the petition bo forwarded to the Genoral Government — Both lottors were received. *

Petition-.—A petition was roceived from ; a numbor of ratepayers, asking that Max. woll Avonue he opened out to Richmond Avenue, and that tho road be put in repair/: — Referred to tho Legal Committee to ! report to the Council. Finance Committee. — Cr. Billington road tho roport of tho above committee which rocommended that no new works should bo undertaken for the present. On March .10 there was' a balanco of £227 ; since then £613 had beon collected in rates, £55 in abattoir fees, dogs collars, &c, Government subtidy £282, making a total of £1,200, and there was at present time only £34 in the bank with about £400 to collect in rates. It wai recommended that the outstanding rates be collected. The report was adopted. Streets Committee Report.—The report of the Streets Committee waa read. Mr Ambury moved that conaidering the Btate of the finances, the cutting down of Pollen.'. street be struck out of the report of the Streets Committee. This was carried, and: the report as amended was adopted. Nicht of Meetino. —Councillor Lee pro-: po?ed, "That the night of meeting be altered to tho secend Monday in each' month."—Carried. ■
