Angus Robortson. a young man, has committed suicide by shooting himself at his mother's farm, Upper Clutha. Manslaughter of a wife is not such a serious crime apparently. Geo. Manning Rees, convicted of that crime at Christchurch, has been sentenced to twelve months' hard labour.
A girl named Mallen was badly burned at Windsor, Otago, on Friday last, through her clothes catching fire. Christchurch Gold-mining Company have had an assay made of stone from a reef six feet thick, with the result that gold was found at the rate of 2 Jozs per ton. The London "Times" considers that the Wine Committee of the Exhibition have not rebutted the charges brought against them to the effect that tho interest of producers had not received their first thoughts. Mr Best, late cashier in tho Treasury Department at Wellington, was yesterday presented by Sir Julius Vogel, on bebalf of the Btafl', with a set of silver plate, worth about £100.
Forging, or even cattle stealing, is a more serious crime than beating one's wife to death At Christchurch, yesterday, Richard Maoma, a Maori, and Mat Wells, were convicted of cattle stealing, and sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment with bard labour.
A steamer similar to the s.s. Eldorelio, but fitted with the Hall refrigerating machinery, is to arrive at Oamaru. in March, to load frozen meat for London. A cargo for this veseel has been guaranteed in order to brock down a compact,by which the two steamship companies trading to this colony have Becured a monopoly of tho use of the refrigerator.
