CITY COUNCIL.

Tfir ordinary meeting of the above body was held last evening, Present: The Mayor (Mr W. B. Waddei), Crs. Phillippa, Evans, LuKoche, Devore, Pignan, Buchanan, Atkin, Crowther, Holland, Cooper, Goldie, Lennox, Trenwith, Davies, Clarke, James, Kidd, and Garratt.

Corbkspondkvcr. — Letters received wero dealt with as follow :—From D. F. Davip, Milford-Bt,, asking the Council to lay a few drain-pipes and fill in the gully in front of hia houHo ; also to lay water mains, in order that he might obtain the use of it. Tho Engineer reported that the accommodation . would cost £30, and that such expenditure would not be warranted : Resolved that a reply in accordance be forwarded.— From G. S. Cooper, Colonial Secretary's Office, Wellington, stating that the Colonial Secretary considered the question submitted by the Council—as to who should take in hand the matter of interments in closed cemeteries—a leeal one, and therefore for the consideration of the City Solicitor. It suggested that tho Council should formally notify the soxton, or person in actual charge, that he was not to permit any interments save tho statutory exceptions in that cemetery under the penalties provided by section 77 of tho Cemeteries Act of 1882 ; and id tho event of a breach of that section, information should be laid by tho Inspector of Nuisances or any othor officer of the Council: Received and roforred to the Logal Committee —From Francis Hull, asking the Council to remit the rates on the building known as Hull's Bond, Albert-street, as it had not been occupied for tho laßt two yoare. The Town Clerk stated that tho amount of rates due was £10 16s 8d : Referred to the Finance Committee. —From C. Joynt, calling attention to a largo break in The " very badly constructed channelling" in front of his house in Pioton street, and asking to have tho samo required: Kesolved that while tho Council sympathise with tho writer they do not feel it their duty to makogooddannige caused by bad woathor.— Krom T. F. Cheesjman, thanking tho City Council for consenting to supply water to tho liah ponda of the Acclimatisation Society, and stating that the Society understood that tho sorvico pipos, otc, would remain the proporty of the Society, and as hucli might bo taken up nhoulii the water supply not bo required : Ko-olvcd that such action bo poiuiittod. — From L. Outhwaite ami Charles Thomas Outhwaito, executors of tho lato Thomas Outhwaito, ntating that since Juno, ISSS, they had been provontod from repairing promises or leaning or building on land situated at tho corner of iJrincesstroot and Waterloo Quadrant, owing to the lovols not being definitely iixed ; also asking the Council to remit tho rates since tho promisos were destroyod by fire last Juno : Referred to the Finance Committco with tho addendum that there was no immodiuto prospoct of tho levels boing altered. —From J. Mumford, applying, ou behalf of the trustees of tho Crickot Ground, for tho use of tho horso rollor, as it waß necessary to havo the ground rolled daily until cominoncement of the crickot season. The Mayor moved, "That tho roller boat once advertised for Halo, as there were others who wished to purchase :" The resolution was adopted, and the question of an upset prico was referred to Finance Committee.— From Thomas Rowley, stating that it would cost i'CO to raise hia houso in Kmmott street to the new level, aud prayiug th'j Council to increase tho com pensation from £5 to £'20 : Resolved that the previous decision of the Council be adhered to.—From Thomas Holder, architect, asking for a concession under the building rules with regard to Mr G. Garrott'B party wall*, as the oxtra cost entailed would be £f>7. Cutting Down of Hobson-btrekt.—Tho Joint Comuiittoo roported that a list of particulars of arrangement re compensation v us laid boforo tho Committee on the 14th instant, and Bubinittod for tho information of the Council. It {s not proposed to proceed with tho works in Swangon, Uhapol, and Moore-streets at present.— The .Mayor stated that the total amount of compensation was £8,300. A memo, was read from tho Engineer, stating that the plans and specifications were now roady for cutting down of Hobson and Wyndham--Btroets ; tho estimated cost was* i' 5,300, Tho Mayor thon moved, " That tho altered levels bo now advertised."—Cr. Dignan asked if there was any noed to wait. Could they not go forward with the work at once ? — The Mayor said it was quite competent for any Councillor to movo in that direction.— On tho motion of Cr. Crowther, it was rosolved that tho tenders bo callod.—Standing Orders were then suspended to enable tho Council to adopt a resolution authorising tho work to be proceeded with. West-strkkt.—Cr. Garratt read the following report from the committee appointed to consider this matter :—" That on the Bth itiHtant Mr Willis signed, and is now only awaiting preparation of deed to convoy to the Council tho angle of land mentioned in our former report. We would recommend that the sum of £200 be offered to Mr Hewitt for the allotment at tho corner cf West and Montague-streets. That in event of said offer being accepted, the Engineer be instructed to call for tenders forthwith. Signed, Henry Garratt, Thomas Davis, J. Trenwith."

Waterworks Material. — It was resolved to advertise for the neceßeary pumping gear and piping required for the Kyber Pass and Mount Eden Heservoir.

Levels of Chrran-str'set.—The levels of tliie street were fixod as advortised,there being no objectors.

Motion.—Cr. Atktn moved, '.'That the Engineer be instructed to give an approximate coat for cutting down Queen-street to the permanent level, between Karangahapo Road and .Alexandra-street."—This was adopted.

Domain Comjiittee's Report was then read and adopted. He motion 1,080 by Cr. Aickin with regard to Domain improvements, your Committee recommend that as soon as the weather becomes settled, tho Engineer hove the paths surveyed and pegged, and bo authorised to call for .tenders for the work of formation.
