The weights for the principal events of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club Spring Meeting have made their appearance. For the Spring Handicap, Brigadier haa been allotted 7st 81b, and if he continues to keep in his present good health, I would sooner stand him than anythingelseengaged. I take' Pasha (Bat 111b), Waitiri (Bdt 61b), and Pearl (Bst 111b), to be the best of the others. If in anything like his old form, Director with lOat 71b, reads well in the Hurdle?, and Bella (list 71b) has nothing to complain of. Acceptances are due on the 23rd September. The whole of the Hon. W. Robm?on's string have been withdrawn from the Caulfield Cup, bo that we may assume the Canterbury pportemaa does not intend visiting Australia thia spring. I notice by late Christcburch papers that Winchester is quoted at 100 to 6 taken for the New Zealand Cup. Mr H. Oxenbam, of Sydney, has forwarded me a copy of his "Australian Handicap Guide," containing a mass of information useful to turfites. A new aspirant for local favour in the shape of Mr L. H. Scharrer's "Australian and New Zealand Turf Guide " also made ita appearance thia week, and is a most creditable production. It is published at the low price of 6d, and at this^Boason of the year the little volume should command a ready sale. In Christcburch lately, Brigadier has been all tho rage for tho New Zealand Cup and Derby, either in double event wngers or straight, out and ha now heads the list of quotations for each race. One of his ownern the other day accepted from 500 to 10 from one of the local pencillere that the son of Mueket wins the treble, Now Zealand Cup, Derby and Canterbury Cup. The Taranaki Jockey at a special meeting on Saturday last, decided to adopt tho new racing rules of the Canterbury and Dunedin Jockey Clubs. In the course of some remarks Mr Standish stated to the members that the new rules had a tendency towards the promotion of honest sport, and, by adopting them, the club would bo plaoed in the position of a metropolitan club, with jurisdiction over the minor clubs of the district. J. Kean has hal another addition made to hia team in the shape of the hurdle racer Mi=s Agnes. Rebel Chief has also been put in his hands to bo prepared for the Pakuranga Hunt Cup. At Sylvia Park this week Aida produced a colt foal to Ingomar. Pa»ba was landed Bafely at Napier at the latter .end of lagt week, and is reported to be looking exceedingly well. " Sir Liuncelot" has been paying a visit to several of the leading stables at Riccarton, and from come lengthy notes of hisl learn that Neleon never looked better in his life, and that Artillery ia sound and well. My confrere reports that Stoneyhurst ia also looking blooming, but as hia >egs were encaeed in bandages, he had no Opportunity of judging of his soundness. Speaking of the accident to Commotion, She "Australasian" of last week contains tfho folltrwing r—"Tho event of the weak has been Commotion's acoidont, resulting from striking hi<nself on the off for* fetlock whilat executing a galop last week with Aglaos on the new track in=ide the course proper. The injury h lower down than the one Commotion sustained last spring, and, although no t-ttorb wilf b3 ppared to bring him to the post for the Welbonrno Cup, Mr Dakin entertains the gravest of doubts as to his successful battling through a sound preparation. Misfortunes never corsesingly, and, therefore, it followed as a thifeg of course that another of Mr Dakin's charge? Aglaos— should gat cast in his box, and sustain an injury to his heel that, at one time, threatened to seriously interfere with his Derby and Cup preparation. However, the Fates were more propitious, for, after a day or two's spell, tho handsome chestnut was once more into the breach, and is in work again." _ ' The Australian Jockey Club have received excellent entries for their big Spring Meeting, which commences on the 18th of the present month. The names of Malua and Commotion are missing from tho Hat, but among those entered for tho Steeplechase I notice tho nnme of our old friond Julia Ann. Mr Hamilton Osborne, the bydney sportsman, has placed his racehorses in Mr Clibhorn's handa for absolute sale by auction, on the Monday after the A J.C.SpringMeoting. Jacinth (the full brother to NordenfeidtJ ia among those to be submitted. When following the Melbourne bounds recently, Mr C. Glaascock, tho prominent Victorian amateur rider, received a nasty fall, breaking three of hn ribs, and seriously Injuring hia head. He was riding Locbiel, who fell with him at a fence. The Hon.-J'ames WhHe haa sustained a very serious loss by the death of his yearling colt Paragon, a full brother to Acme. While galloping about in the Kirkham paddocks he fell and broke hia nock. His breeder regarded him as the best celt he had ever bred, and it ia stated 3,000 guineas would not havo purchased him. Hermitage ie once more an occupant of a box at Mr D. O'Brlen'e 3tables, having been brought back' from Dunedin a fow days i-ince. Rubina not having proved in foal this season, O'Brien has put her in work DBThore is a probability of another stud bein<* established in Victoria ; in fact, it is said tnat the Maribyrnong establi?hment is likely to be revived. At all events Robinfon Crusoe is to join Cocoanut and a number of mares which were disposed of at the Hileqf+heTerrnraslud, and have already "■arrived »t Mnribyrnong. Mr StPiuVe mures. Ins and Spinnaker, havo each dropped a filly foal to Apremont "nd Charm, the Chri.tchurch Middlop.il Company's maro, has produced a hlly foal tOTho 'match! between Mr Horsfall's St Michael and Mr Samuol Grim wood a Ormonde, in Melbourne, has ended in a «' fizzle," and tho money dopoeited was withdrawn. ~ Sou'-weator bas been purchased by Mr 3. Walker, of the Aramoho Stud Farm, Wanganui, where he will stand the season. , _ , , ... Tho New Zealand bred Calumny has this season produced a colt to Chesterfield. An Irish jockey named Miley has aruved in Melbourne. He has often ridden at the Currach meetings in Ireland, alfo in England, and is anxious to enter into an engagement to rido for some Australian TheHonG. McLean's New Zealand Cup and Derby candidute St. Iven is *aid to bo improving every day, and is reported the nvjat determined eoar in training at Forbury. Mr Turnbull is bringing him on e'.owly in preference to breaking his heart with too much fast work before it U needed. Firßt Lord i* reported to be looking a perfect picture, and evidently ia the best of health. According to a Queensland exchange thia ia how they are going to tell when a dead heat ia run at their race meetings:— Uueeneland Turf Club have engaged the services of a photographer, -who will place hla lens in front of the judge's box, opposite the winning post, so as to take an instantaneouß photograph of tho horse or horses first past the po=t. As they piss, the judge presfes a spring, whose action exposes and ie-cover= ihe lens in a fraction of B prcond, and the photograph thua obtained will get at rest all doubts and questions as to dead hoit verdioU, which rarely give eatisfactioo. The Hon. J White is in treaty for etablea at Canlfield, and it is possible a portion of bis string may be trained there during (ho tpring.
