MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
The annual municipal elections took place yesterday, tho poll in each instance closing atOp m. .... Devonport. Mr Tanner was Returning Officer, aM Messrs Cherry and Keefe scrutineers.. Toe poll resulted: William Philcpx,2|_fi Etichaid Cameron, 2-15; W. H. Brown, 224; Thomas E Durance, 145; Charl« W. Cave, 140. Two informal vojaa'werfl recorded. The first three were announpejl as duly elected. ParneU. Of the five candidates, the two Cpunrjflitns who retired by rotation, Messrs MoKensjj) and li eland, wero defeated. The contest was carried on with much energy, and resulted as follows : —John Savage,297;"Jolra McConnell, 263; Albert Dewes, 237; D.«ft McKcnzie, 229 ; F. Ireland, 166. Mesta Savage, McConnell, ami Dewes were there- I fore declared duly elected. There were 12 ; informal votes. Mr Mark Rowlings officiattd as Returning Officer. ~ J Newmarltet. Of the seven candidates nominated, Mr Taite retired, because doubt* bad been,eiprised of the validity of his nomination. The contest was fought out keenly, and,at I G o'clock Major Pine, the Ketuming Officer, -1 made known the result of the poll as follows:—W. C. Rosi?, 127; W. Morgflfc, 115; George Bishop, 105; J. rJoggflWj Holmes, 99 ; Burgess, 26. There wasone informal vote. The three former were , therefore declared elected, and expreesd their thanks for the support accorded ttfenT. Mr Hogg, one of the defeated candidates, also returned thanks for the large numßfcr of votes accorded him. A vote oLtnaiiks to the Returning Officer concluded JMWceedings. " " |g Chrlstchurob. - - - > The municipal elections here did not excite very much interest; but they resulted in two councillors seeking re-election being ousted, Messrs D. B. McLaren and J. Gfes beating Messrs 11. Crook and C. Duncdin, Groat interest was taken in the municipal elections in the city. The newly-formed 3 Ratepayers' Association carried two. candidates by a good majority, la the third ward their candidate was defeated by a'few votes. In tho fourth ward their candidate retired, but they supported the retiring candidate, who was defeated, and MrH. S. Fish was elected.
