POLICE PROSECUTIONS.

Wellington, Saturday. The question as to the right of police officers to conduct prosecutions based on informations laid by private persons has been raised in the local Magistrate's Court, and came up for decision yesterday. Acting upon a hint given by the Chief Justice, Mr Wardell, R.M., ruled that except as regards informations laid under the Police Offences Act, constables are not entitled to conduct eaeen even if the informants should derfre it. A prisoner who had been arrested for alleged larceny was therefore set at liberty, the informant being a Hindoo, who was incapable of conducting his own case and indisposed to employ counsel.
