THE GREAT SOUTH ROAD.
(To the RUitor.l
Pill,-1 think, with Mr ."Mitclielson, Unit we aro loonmeh in tlio habit of look ing for Government help in matters purely local, and it would udd much to tho prosperity of this rising colony ii wo adopted a more self-reliant policy ; but 1 do not think the Government aro free from blame in allowing the Great South lloiul to remain in its present diHgracefiil state. Instead of the Government putting, the road . in. repair Uoforo oliorinK to hnuil il ovor to thelocal. Hoards, Uic.v allowed it to get into a state uuile unlit for trufllc. and then asked the Hoards to take It over. Now, X am not aware that the Highway Hoards were ever consulted about the removal of the tolls! thu.tollij were first removed and no provision whatever was made for the repair of Ihe road. Tn its present state it would take the united rates of the whole of tho Hoards .abutting the Great South Koad to put it ia order. The toll cannot bo easily he re-established, the Counties Act is cumbersome and cxpen. sive, anil 1 am afraid the amalgamation of tho Highway Districts interested would bo (liillcull. if not Impracticable. In tho Mnnukau the road is Impassable; accidents are of daily occurrence, and I think it a reasonable request, that tho Government of tho Colony who rewjved all Ihe tolls should ut once put the Great Eolith Koad in order before asking the Koad Boards to take it over.—Yours, etc.. J. 11. LUNNOX.
