ALARMING NEWS. Threatened Afghan Invasion or Turkestan. London, August 17. The "London Standard" published to-day a statement which has produced a tremendous sensation throughout the United Kingdom. It is to the effect that the British Government has concealed the fact of eerioua troubles having arieen in connection with tho Afghan frontier question, intelligence having been received in London to the effect that a collieion between the Afghans and Russians is certain to Bpeedily occur, as a powerful Afghan army, consifting of , 11 MO men, with 34 guns, is preparing . to' cross the Oxus and invade Turkestan, which has recently become tributary to Russia. The Afghans are represented as i being eager to bogln righting, and are only restrained with difficulty by th«ir leadms. »
