CRIMES AND SUICIDES.

Matthew Johnston is in custody at Wellington charged with stabbing James Mclntyro, having inflicted seven or eight wounds, none of which are serious.

At half-past seven a.m. on 10th inst. the shop of Messrs B. Porter & Co., at the top of Symonds-street, was opened as usual by their shopman, E Burton, when he found that a safe, by Preston, weighing ljcwt., and containing £41 in cash, ledger, cash book, and other jjapers, had been carried off bodily. The till, containing 4s in silver and some coppers, was likewise exploited. Ingress had beon obtainod by bursting open the front door, which was fastonod by a simple draw-back bolt, and had no bar. The door had been locked by Mr Burton the night before, and ho found not a scratch upon the floor

The charge of murder against William "Rowland, commenced at Gisborne on Tuesday, May 25, and concluded tho noxt day. The accused was committed for trial. The evidence showed that tho deceased and the accused quarrelled over a partnership contract tho ni^ht previous to the murder. The deceased, shortly before ho died, swore on oath that ho was stirring porridgo for breakfast, when tho accused shot him through the breast. The accused told the police-hat tho deceased (Neave) had been brooding ovor money m attors, and bail shot himself, and tried to kill liiui (tho accused) with an axe. The raedioal evidence proved that the wound coul-j*} not have been selfinflicted. '
