Mail Steamer Aground In the Suez Canal
London, April 23.—The P. and 0. steamer Valetta grounded heavily in the Suez Canal, at Ismalia, and it has been found necessary to unload her, which is now boing done. Tho Canterbury Railway. The Company formed to construct a line railway from Nelson to Springfield, in Canterbury, has been registered with a capital of half a million. Abyssinia and Italy. Fifteen thousand Abyssinian troops have been massed at Keren, about 75 miles from Massowah, to resist the occuption of territory in the vicinity of the latter place by Italy. Ships on the Australian Station. H.M S. Opal and the gunboat Rover have been recommended for service on the Australian station. H.M S. Thalia will convey new crews to Australia for these vessels. Lord Sheffield's Cricketers. The following are the names of Lord Sheffield's team :—W. G. Grace, Read, Newhan, Ulyett, Shaw, Shrewsbury, Scutton,Barnes, Bates, Flowers, and Phillips.
On Thursday evening"a grand athletic carnival and assault at arms was giver in the Opera Houee by Professor Carrollo and pupils. Thero was a large attendance.
