Mr Rolleston at Temuka.
Mr Rolleston had a large audience in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, on Maroh SO, and his address was interesting and exhaustive. He said with referenoe to the threatened dissolution of j Parliament that it was political finesse, but coming from a Minister of the Crown it was an unconstitutional practice. There was also the threat to divert the North Island loan, but threats did neither good nor harm. The Government policy was protection and large public works pushed on rapidly by large loans. The policy was bad in Itself, and a bad time was chosen for it. Taxation should only be for revenue, and borrowing should go no further than the present revenue would provide interest for. A million a year borrowed for Public Works was enough, and that should 'be gradually'curtailed. The railways already made were hot folly utilised. The resumption of land for settlement waa justifiable if owners were compensated, but he did not agree with Sir George Grey's scheme of last session. He thought tbe people might do much to help themselves on to the land by co-operation on the same principle as building societies. The village settlements eoheme worked admirably. As to the East and West Coast Railway, he thought the concessions in the Act of 1884 quite as far as the House could go. After several questions had been asked and
answered, a vote of thanks and confidence was carried unanimously. During the speech Mr Rolleston was frequently applauded, and at ita termination received three cheere.
