DECAY OF WHARF PILES.

The following occurs in the Harbour Engineer's annual report: -The Board decided jt the end of 1884 to have the wholo of the mder structure of the Queenawharf examined by a diver. Thia waa done during the first few months of tho year, and the roault Eiten to the Board In a memo of Gth June. Thoinvestigatioo shows that the piles were in many cases stripped of copper ; that where heart of Totara they remained untotiohed by the teredo, although aofteued on the surface where in contact, with the wter, and nibbled at by a small crab ; and that iron bark and red g\im piles, where exposed wero inucn riddled by the teredo in ono or two cases to a dangerous extent Preventive measures were takon under my directions, which, I trust will prevent any further spread of the worm in the piles attacked. The Board during tho year imported divine dreaa and apparatus (torn Mesara Siabe, t'orman, and Co.. of London, at a coat delivered of All 21 ISs lOd. The result of the examination of the work under water has been a determination by the Board not to have copper piles used in the inner tee extension. The breastwork to Waterloo Quay (built of jarrah by the General Government) is. becoming yearly more and moro dilapidated by the raragoa of the toredo.
