Tauranga Good Templars invite the Grand Lodge of New Zealand to hold its next session there. -
About fifty zealous temperance men have volunteered to watch Wellington hotols to see that the Sunday closing law is observed.
Sir William Fox says that all over New Zealand, a large proportion of the publichouses carry on the drink trade on Sundays nearly as freely us on every other day of the week.
The Executive of the New Zealand Alliance, recently held at Wellington, consists of the following gentlemen :—President, Sir W. Fox; Vice-Presidents—Auckland: J. Newman, D. Goldie, Rev. A. Reid. Invercargill: J. Lennie. Nelson :W. T. Bond. Hawke's Bay: J. Harding and Hori Ropiha. Wellington: F. H. Fraser, Rev. Oliver, New Plymouth; R, C, Hughes and Major Atkinson. Christchurch: Rev. T. W. Isitfc and Archdeacon Dudley. Dunedin : Hon. R. Stout, J. W. Jago, F. Fulton. The Executive Committee to sit in Auokland was elected' as follows: F. G. Ewington, E. Withey, G. Winatone, H. J. L, Bailey, J. Elkin, Dr. Knight, Waymouth, and Neal.
At Bombay Settlement, on Saturday, March 20, an interesting meeting took place in the Wesleyan Church in connection with the formation of a " tent" of the Order of Rechabitoß. Mr J. Jenkins, from Auckland, presided, and gave a brief address, while Messrs Kothorham, Biggs, Carr, Macdermott and Morgan, from the city, also spoke. A goodly number of settlers having declared their readiness to join the Order, the "Hope of Bombay Tent, No. 8." was at once formed, and the following officers elected : —P.C.R., Brother W. Morgan ; C.R., Brother T. B. Jones ; D. R., Brother Rev. E. J. Macfarlane; secretary, Brother H. Campbell; treasurer, Brother D,'McKenzie ; C.S., Brother W. Corinthwaito, jun.; 8.5., Brother W. Murphy; Levite, Brother J. Murphy; guardian, Brother A. Sawyer. The first annual meeting of tbo Auckland Women's Temperance Union was held at the Temperance Hall, Albert street, -on March 19. After tea, the chair was taken by the Rev. S. Macfarlane, President of the Gospel Temperance Miaaion. Mrsßrame, President of tbe Union, summarised the work of the society as follows:—" In addition to distributing temperance literature, securing the assistance of the press in their work, they had held cottage meetings, visited the refuges, the sick, the destitute, relieved the poor from a fund raised by themselvea, and eatabliahed a sewing circle to aid needy families where requisite. They bad done good work also in the promoting of petitions to the Assembly re tbe employment of females as barmaids, and in favour of a female franchise on the licensing laws Mrs Ritldell (Secretary pro tern.) read the annual report, which showed the membership of the Union to be 165. Mrs Dewar, Treasurer, read' the balance-sheet, which showed that the receipts for the year had been £66 17s 9d, and there was a small credit balance on hand. Addresses were then delivered by the Chairman, the Rev. Mr Worboys, and by Mr J Glover. During the course of the evening musical selections were renddered by Misses Brame, Archer, Main, Cook, I and Barton. After the meeting a number of ladies present signed the pledge, and became members of too Union.
