FIRE AT AVONDALE.

Between 12 and 1 o'clock on the night of Saturday last a fire broke out in a small cottage owned and occupied by Mr Evans, of Avondale. Mrs Evans wasawakened by th-

crackling of tire and discovered that the kite chen was in flames. She had barely time to escape with the baby wrapped in a blanket before the whole building was enveloped in fire, and it was afterwards speedily burned to the ground, nothing whatever being saved. The house was insured for £100, and the furniture for £50 in the Colonial Office. Mr Evans says, however, that this will not nearly cover his losses, which includes £20 in notes which were burned.
