INTER SCHOOL SPORTS.
The crickot ground on Friday last was the scene of a very interesting athletic contest betwoon the Auckland College and Grammar School and the Church of Englanc Grammar School. There wore nine events and two or three boys ficin each schoo contested each race. Mr B. N. R. Fordei acted as starter; judges, Messrs Cox anc Pycroft; timekeeper, Mr Knox ; and referee, Mr Highton. The firßt race, 100|yaids (fiat) started at ton o'clock. Hall and Hesketh represented the Church of England Grammar School, while Cooko (the winner of the school cup)oameto thp scratch for the Auckland Grammar School. It resulted in an easy win for Parnell, Cooko beipe out of it from the start. JJall, 1; Heßketh, 2. Tiino, llsec. Throwing the Cricket Bah—Poland (A.G.S.), Ist, SOyd 9in ; Stevens (C.E.G.S.), 2nd ; Hall (C.E.G.S.), 3rd. Hurdle Kaoe, 120 yards, 10 flights.— Poland (A.G.S.), Ist; Jordan (C.E.G.S ), 2nd; Stevens (C.E.G.S.), 3rd. .Stevens, Poland, and Cooke were well oft' by the gun, and made a very good race for halfway, but Poland drew out and won with three or four yards in hand. Time, 20isec. High Jump.- Hall {C.E G.S.) won this on his first jump of 4ft fiin, Battley, the A.G.S. representative, only making 4ft 4in. Haw-mile - Poland (A.GS.) won this after a splendid race, in lmin ISsec, Short and Hull (C.E.U.S.) being 2nd and 3rd. Pole Jump.—l, Poland (A.G.S ), 7ft 7in ; 2, Bowdon (C.E.G.S.), 7ft 4in. Five started. Fountain (C.E.G.S.) led for first two laps, when Short (C.E.G. 8.) came to the front,and steadily increased his lead, and won a well-run race in smin. 34 2 saec, Poland (A.G S.) 2, Fountain (C.E.G.S.) 3. Quabtkb Milk.-The cup winners in each school, Hall (C.E G.S.) and Cooko (A.'.J.S ), started for this. Cooke led for the first 200 yards, when Hall caught him up, and after a short struggle walked away, and won in a walk, Cooke giving up 50 yards from homo. Long Jump.—Poland (A G.S.) won on 18ft. 2in.; Hall, 16ft. 7in. being second. The A,G.S. thus win the contest by one event as yet. The mile has yet to be run. A very successful and pleasing entertain ment was given by the Mount iden Baptist Band of Hope on Friday evoning, in the chapel. Mr Crudge occupied the chair,and briefly introduced the proceedings in a few well-chosen remarks. Songs were vory creditably rendered by Messrs Freoman, Kenderdine, Rowe, and Andrews. A dialogue by Misses Morris, Mixon, and Johnston was vory suitablo and instructive. Readings by Messrs Yeoman, Rotherham, and Stainton were well executed. A pianoforte- solo by Miss Davis was performed in a most finishod Btylo, and warmly applauded. Mr Davidson gave an interest ing address upon " What Will the Child Becomo ?" illustrated with phrenological diagrams. As Mr Havidson had not time to complete his address, ho promised to como again. Miss A. Lovett presided at tho harmonium, and tho meeting, which was much enjoyed by all, closed with votes of thanks and prayer by the Chairman. At n meeting of unemployed at Adolaido, a letter was read from a man who had gone to tho Government works at Hergott to his wifo, complaining bitterly of tho stato of affairs prevailing there. Provisions were exceedingly dear and wretchedly bad, and tho water was undrinkablo. A very large proportion of the m»n in tho place were ill, and the writer added that he had seen fifty coffins piled up waiting for occupants.
