OTAHUHU RACING CLUB SPRING MEETING.
Thk Otahuhu Boeing Club Spring Meeting took placo on Saturday in the presence of about 1,000 spectators. Tho weather was (splendid, and the racing of a fair character. The greatest interest of the afternoon was centred in the Hurdles and Steeplechase, in which the Australian horse Grar.ville made his first appearance in New Zealand._ lne Hurdles ho had no difficulty in winning, and it was anticipated he would have just as oasy a victory in tho Steeplechase, but unfortunately while holding a good position in the race, he ricked his back at ono ot the jumps hidden from view, and after lingering for some hours he died. The greatest sympathy was expressed on all hands for Mr J. Gallagher, his owner, who only brought tho horso from Victoria three weeks ago at a cost of about £400. The lot wore despatched to a fair start, and tho colours of Little Wonder and Snoko woro tho iirst to show in front, but by tho timo a quarter of a mi'o had been traversed, Nannio formod ono of tho leading division, and pasting tho stand tho order was: Snake, Nannio, and Orphan, Victoria boing closo in attendance, and tho ro-it in Indian file. Snako continued to lead tho field round tho back stretch, whore Nannio comuionced to fade away, and Victoria and Orphan improvod their positions. In the early part of tho race, imd to tho entrance of tho straight for homo, it looked any odds on Snake, who was a rod-hot favourite, but ho gradually fell back, and Flagoolot euccocded in winning by a couplo of longths. Tho horeo lingered till throo o'clock on Sunday mornintr, whon he diod. Tho totalisator paid a dividond of £20 17s on Julia Ann.
