ALLEGED INFANTICIDE
The Girl McCarthy Arrested.
On the fourth page of this evening's issuo will bo found a report of tho ovidonce taken at the inquest yesterday on the body of tho infant child of the unfortunate girl, Mary Esther Anne McCarthy. The verdict was to the effect that death wob the result of neglect, the child's position on the floor interfering with its respiration. As the outcome of the inquest, tho police took steps this morning to place the girl undor arrest, and she was brought in from Mount Roskill by Constable Dews, and charged at the Police Court boforo Mr H. U. Seth Smith, R.M., with manslaughter. Sergeant Pratt asked for a remand till tomorrow, as the police wero not prepared to go on with the case to day, and tho remand was accordingly granted. The evidence in tho case haß been forwarded by the coroner to tho Resident Magistrate for his perusal. Tho girl, who does not appear to have any friends in hor misfortune, was sent to Mt. Eden this afternoon. She is not represented by counsel, but probably some rising young barrister will take up the case for . her:
