LONDON", June 9.
The debate on tho financial proposals of the Government was brought to a closo at \ an early hour this morning, when a division was taken, with the result that tho budget was rejected by a majority of twelve, notwithstanding that Mr Gladstone announced that tho Government would mako its acceptance a Cabinet question. An amendment proposed by Sir Michael Hicks-Beach condemning the proposed increase in tho duty on beer and spirits was then carried. In consequcnco of tho adverse vote tho resignation of Ministers is expected. A special despatch to the Press As.oc.ation says :—" In the House of Commons Sir Michael Hicks-Beach's motion condemning tho budget proposals of tho Government came on for discussion. Mr Gladstone said tho budget question would moan the lifo or death of the Government. Mr Childora, Chancellorof tho Exchequer, charged tho Tories with opposing concessions to the colonies. Somo excitement was caused during tho debate by tho l'arncllites jumping up on tho seats and endeavouring to speak. On the division being taken, the motion was carried by 20-1 to 2f>2. Tho defeat of tho Government was quite unexpected.
