Tho barque Excelsior has cleared at the Customs for Whangaroa. Sho goes there in ballast to load timoer for Sydney.
The brigantine Lapwing, which loft thisporl oa May 22, arrived at Timaru yesterday.
The barquo Carl Both was removed this morning from Railway Wharf to Queon-streot Wharf, and hes comenced discharging there. The cutter Fanny was launched from Mr C. Bailoy'a slip yesterday, after undergoing some • repairs. After leaving the ways she ran down a small cutt.r belonging to Mr Clark. The brigantine Ircno, from New York via Dunedin. arrived this morning, and was towed alongside of tho Railway Wharf by the tug Vwhina. Tho Ireno left Dunednl three weeks a-,'o. She had stroog S.W. winds for two days then N. winds till off East Capo on the sixth day. After this heavy galea from W. to S.W. .ii-cvallcd for five days, and were followed by moderate S. winds, which lasted till arrival. Tho 6.8. Ta.av.-ora left for Southern ports this afternoon, with tho following passengers:—For -Jieborne: Mesßre Yuend, A. Davis, J. Porris. For Napier: Rev. P. Ccrnford. Mrs Fenwlck, Mrs Herbert, Mioses Wilkins and Wilkinson. For Wellington: Messrs Edmonds, Cartwright, bore. Brown, Heywood, Gorman, J. Hurst. Barton, Singlair. Dodd. Abernethy, Miss Billings. For Lyttolton: Mrs Woody ear, Mr Day. For Blult: Mr and Mrs Dunn, Master Dunn. For Moltourne: Rev. Father Dunn. Tho Tarawora also took passengers for the N.Z.S. Cc.'s Tonsariro, at Wellington. Chango of name does not apparently always bring ohange of luck. A year or two ago a B'camer named the Daphne capsized while being liunched on tho Clydo, great loss of-life resulting. When she had been refitted and ropalred she was freßh named tho Rose, hut shortly afterwards sank in Portruah Harbour. Recovered from the bottom of the water, sho hailed undor n third name, which, howover, did not prevent her going ashore on Big Cumbrae. This third disaster waa not final, for she was got off, christened iho lantho, and despatched to Smyrna, bat she had not apparently lost her old failing, for cho struck on a rock off County Down.
