DEFENCES OF NEW ZEALAND.
Artillery Force for Auckland.
After a short interva of false security, during which hopes were indulged that tho present Anglo-Russian difficulty would be amicably settled, thero are now undoubted indications of tho speedy declaration of war, and thero is a revival of .the excitement in this colony, along with renewed interest in the measures being adopted for effective defence. It is reassuring to know that the steps being taken for the protection of Auckland aro in such a forward state. Forty men aro busily engaged at work at tho North Head preparing tho site for tho battery, under tho direction of Mr Bell, assistant to Major Cantley.
Twenty members of the Armed Constabulary from Kihikihi aro passengers by the train which arrives here this afternoon from Waikato. They are under the command of Captain Capel, and have been selected to form the nucleus of tho artillery force for the big guns to be mounted at once for the defence of Auckland Harbour.
