Timaru Harbour Board have resolved to seek Parliamentary powers to borrow £100,000 for the continuation of breakwater and wharf. Captain F. W. Garner, F Battery Artillery, has been appointed to the command of the Napier Volunteer District. It is urged that the employment of shorthand writers in law courts would cheapen and facilitate litigation, and it is probable that Government will give the scheme a trial. Hon. Mr Stout declined to promise that the telephone would be extended to Whangarei Heads unless the settlers guaranteed that it would pay. There appears to be some doubt as to who will officiate at turning the first sod of the trunk railway at Te Awamutu next week. A Pres. Association telegram from Wellington asserts that the ceremony will be performed by Wahanui, Rowi, and Taonui, and that they will be assisted by tbe Hon. Mr Stout. It is not considered likely that there will be any ceremony at tbo Morton end.
