NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITY SENATE.

Successful Candidates in Examinations. —Aftor the list of successful candidates in varioua examinations was presented yesterday afternoon, it was agreed, on the motion of the Roy. J. C. Andrew :-(l) That junior scholarships bo granted to W. F. Ward, F. G. Gibbs, M. Allan, C. Lamb, and R. Speight, A, E. Mills, P. G. Morgan, J. H. Smith. (2) That out of the 204 candidates who came up for matriculation, 120 bo allowod to pass. |3) That of tho 13 candidates taking tho whole or part of tho medical preliminary examination, G. A. Copland (Dunodin), E. Fooks (Ashburton), W. Butemont (Christchurch), W. Hodder (Nelson), and J. C. Smith (Wellington) be allowed to pass. (4) That of the 37 candidates for junior scholarships, all bo considered as having qualified for matriculation should they desire it. Tho Committee also recommended that candidates in future be distinguished by numbers to bo drnwn by lot by tho Registrar.— The roport was soconded and carried.

Election op Chancellor and Vicechancellor.— In eulogistic speeches the Rev. J. C. Andrews moved, and Sir 0. M, O'Rorke seconded, that Dr. Hector should bo appointod Charicollor vice Mr Toncred (deceased.) The motion was passed with acclamation, and Dr. Hector briefly returned thanks. On the motion of Dr. Rosoby, seconded by Dr. Cowie, tho Rev. J. C. Andrews was appointed Vice - Chancollor. Mr Andrews acknowledged. It was resolved that both officers should hold office till tho second session in 1800, provided it did not exceed five years. Mr Cbonin's Petition.—Professor Yon Haast moved the adoption of the Rocess Committee's recommendation, that it was inadvisable to comply with Mr Cronin's petition that students who took tho B.A. degree should not be obliged tho vory next year to go up for honours. Professor Strand seconded. At the suggestion of Dr. Salmond, who objected to this summary way of treating a matter which had never been before the Senate, the petition was read.—Sir G. M. O'Rorke was of opin- ' ion that the petition disclosed a case of hardship, and therefore moved that its further consideration should be postponed till Monday.—The motion was seconded by Dr. Roseby and carried. Notices of Motion. —' The following notices of motion woro handed in :—By Dr. Roseby : That Mr C. C. Bowen be elected a Fellow of the Senate of this University. By Sir G. M. O'Rorke: That Professor Tucker, of the Auckland University College, be elected a Fellow of tho University of New Zealand, in order to fill one of the existing vacancies in the Senate. By Professor Sale : That Mr Charles Henry Herbert Cook be elected a Fellow of the Senate. By Mr Fitchett : That the Registrar be requested to prepare a return showing the different optional subjects that have been tukon by students for the B.A. examinations during tbe past seven years, the return to bo handed to the Chancellor on Monday next. The Senate then adjourned.
