Ono of tho voiy oldest settlers in the Province of Auckland, Mr Hector Sutherland, died yesterday at his residence, Wairou South, at the patriarchal ago of S8 years. The deceased gentleman was born in tho parish of Ciync, Suthorlandshire, Scotland, in 1797, just within three years of tho eloso of last century. At tho ago of IS ho removed with his parents to Nova Scotia, wherotho family refcidod for several yoars. They afterwards removed to Capo Breton, whore were located a largo population from almost all parts cf tho Highlands of Scotland. In 1852 the subject of this notice and his family emigrated, with a number of other Highland settlers of Capo Broton, to South Australia, aceompaniod by their old minister, tho Kov. Norman MoLcod, of Waipu, In 1855 thopo omi(iianla camo to Auckland, and in the following yoar thoy settled at Waipu, Mr Sutherland and liin family being of tho number. Hugo 1870 ho resided at Wairoa South on tho farm now occupied by ono of his sons. Hero Mrs Sutherland died about eight years ago at an advanced ago. Mr SuthoWand was brought early under tho power of tho truth, and over since lod a most exomplary Christian lifo. Ho was mighty in the Scriptures, and greatly beloved by all who possessed similar roligioii.s knowledgo, and who boat know his genuine pioty. As a friend and neighbor ho aould scarcely bo excelled, whilst his hospitality was boundless.
