PAHI REGATTA.
The Pahi annual regatta and sports took place on Wednesday last, 21st inst., at Pahi, under very good auspices, although the attendance) was not co large as on previous occasions, probably on aoc«unt of tho want of hotel accommodation, settlers from a distance finding it difficult to obtain shelter for tho night. This defect, will however, bo remedied by next year, as tho Pahi Hotel is about to be re-opened under able management. There were several sailing boats and friends from tho North Wairoa, and the sports were carried out in a very satisfactory manner. The wind was fresh' from W.S.W. — a "soldier's breeze" for tho regatta course in tho Pahi waters—which, while proving pleasing to tho spectators who watched tho events failed to bring out any wcatherly qualities in tho competing boats, as a northerly or southerly freeze would have done. The first evont was a sailing raco for all comers, the prize boing £10, for which thoro wore five ontrics. This was won by Johnny Harrison, with the Madge, from To. Kopuru, and the Fay second. Tho opon boat sailing race (for local boats only, for prize of ;C7) brought out threo competitors, tho prize being taken by Symonds, and Smith second. The pair-oa--ed pulling race (for local boats only with coxswain, prize £5) was won by Smith, and Harrison second. There were fivo entries for tho skiff race for amatouis who had never won a prize. This was takon by Geo. New, junr., and Radford second. The double-handed punt race had five entries, and was won by Harry Harrison, of the Wairoa, with Masefield second; and the single-handed punt race was also taken by Harry Harrison, Jackman being second. On completion of the regatti, the company adjourned to luncheon on board the Minnie Casey ; after which the athletic sports commenced, consisting of hurdle jump for horses, open handicap foot races, putting the weight, obstacle race, boys' and youths' races, &c. Jumping with polo was won by a Maori named Dawson, height of jump boim* 10ft 2in ; running long jump, by McKay, 19ft ?i nA-,^unninS hißh Jump by Dan Neil McMillan ; the concluding event boing an egg and spoon raco. Most of tho other items were carried off by I. Harrison.. In the evoniDg a concert and ball took placo in the Pahi Hall, which was well attended. Great credit is due to the committeeof managementfor the creditable manner in which the whole affair was carried out, and it was remarked that although a steamer providing refreshments was along side tho wharf, thero was no unseemly conduct of any kind during tho whole day.
