Mining summary.

Thames, December 2. Soiiktiiinq like the excitement attendant upon tho palmy days of rich patches and brilliant returns has once more visited the goldh'eld during the past month, and caused quite a revival of the old speculating mania. The exciting motive has been tho continued and increased productiveness of the Cambria mine and the excellent prospects of its southern neighbour, the Darwin. When last Summary was penned the former Company had just completed a highly satisfactory crushing of general dirt and spocimens. Since then tho run of gold has been followed eastward in the drive for a distance of 50 feet, and carriod down to a similar depth in a winze, the reef in theso two places' yielding about scwt. of rich stone. The directors have resorted to the somewhat extraordinary course of sending the latter to Auckland for treatment, and" their is warmly and unfavourably criticised. The experiment is known to have been but partially successful, and at the time of writing uncertainty prevails as to the probable return, a portion of the tailings having been sent to the Thames for further, treatment. At the 230 feet level, .vhere the gold has been obtained, the workings are well opened up, and furnish a considerable output of quartz, which keops fifteen stampers in cantinuoup employment. The shaft is also being sunk for the purpose of opening another level. It has transpired that tho quantity of gold obtained in Auckland from the directors'experiment at specimon crushing was lOOozs. The mine manager, however, saved 3 barrels of tailings which wero returned to the Thames for berdaning, and gavo tho astonishing return of OGjozs. The retorting of the amalgam obtained from 100 loads of gonoral stuff took place this morning, resulting in a good roturn of 210ozs. likjwts. gold, making a total roturn for the month of 80S0Z8. 4dvvts. The action of the directors with regard to the specimens has been severely commented upon, and caused widespread dissatisfaction hero. In the Darwin mino the Cambria lode has been intersected during the month at the 230 feet lovel, and followed westward for about 2"i feet, gold boing freely visible, with unmistakeablo evidences of improvement in both the main body and its footwall branches. The Moanataiuri Extended Company, which owns the property situated eastward of tho Cambria boundary, has commenced a crosscut to intersect the Bamo lode. Encouraged by the excellent prospects of the mines just referred to, parties of speculators have seemed all available ground ?n the vicinity, and a new pompany known as the Wolseley will shortly oomnionce operations. The shareholders of tho New Prince Imperial are daily expecting tho intersection of tho No. 2 lode by tho crosscut at No. 27 Tlovel, and the appearance of the country in tho face augurs favourably for its productive qualities. I'ayablo quartz is coming to hand from tho- upper workings, but retorting will not take place at the battery until the middle of tho current month. Deep Lovel Cross : A trial crushing of ten loads quart/, from, tho newly-discovered lode at No. ,"i level has yielded nearly ljoxa. par load. Steps arobeing tukon with a view to effecting communication with tho old Mariner workings, and when ventilation is provided by this moans vigorous operations will be commenced. Tho Saxon Company has boen duly formed, and will start work next week from tho Mariner shaft. Tho Queen of Beauty shaft is descending through a favourable channel of sandstone country, which only finds a parallel in its gold-bearing characteristics in the class of rock which enclosed tho roof whero it was most productive at tho upper lovols. Caledonian Low Level : Tho northern crosscut is at present passing through hiird rock, but a favourable) class of sandstone, which preceded it, bore promising, well-mineral-ised quartz veins. A lodo about 9 feet in thickness was intorsooted three) weeks ago in the southern end, and tho drivo has ever sinco bean passing through a succession of small loaders. Caledonian: The triul crushing of eight loads stone from the eastern workings on the Red Queen leudoiyLnt No. 2 level, produced 20/.s. gold^ per loiil, and a bloofe' M "now ''ti'olug oponsti -fo* stoping. The "Kuranul Company1 * trial crushing from No. 2 long drive reef, «»fc tho 8p feet-level, avoragod -Soiw. jier ton, though no gold wiis discernible when breaking the stone, and .operaticpi, here are beiug extended. Bot§ tljlisp claims aro sl}H looking well, and cmslilrips have boon passed in tho Woodstock and Hidden Treasure, claims. Operations at Waihi, as carried on by tho Martha Company, show an improvement in tho average grade of tho~quarsz from the large lodes, and encouraging reports are also received from Waiprongomaj, Active Stops are being takeiiL in di§hict for tho erection, of a feji tytfattp'ry, -lybjeff it js' hoped will We the effect qf b,real#iig tlawj) t^e much-abused "monopoly of crus!iii)g power.
