HOSPITAL COMMITTEE.

Tnrc regular fortnightly mooting of this body took place yesterday afternoon, there being present—The Mayor (Chairman), Colonel Haultain, &nd Messrs Mackechnie, Bull, Daldy, Dando, and Peacock.

House Surgeon's Report.—The Houre Surgeon reported that twenty-eight maks and four females had been admitted since his last report, and 18 males and 5 females discharged, leaving still in the Hospital SO males and 34 females. One female had had to be refused admission through want of room. There had been three deaths. Col. Haultain remarked that hardly a week passed without 'some one being refused admission for want of room.—The Chairman said that one of the objects in asking the trustees of the Coatley bequest to be present that afternoon was to remedy this state of affairs by enlarging the Hospital.

Enlakoement of Hospital akd Rk took. —The Chairman then announced that as the ordinary business had been disposed of, the conterenee between the Committee and the trustees of the Costley bequest would now take place.— The Secretary stated that Mr Firth (one of the trustees) had been apprised of the conference, but was away in the Waikato.— Mr Peacock stated that in the course of several interviews he had had with Sir Julius Vogel on the subject of dealing with the Costley bequest to the three locul institutions connected with the Government, viz., the Hospital, the Old Men's Reiuge, and the Kohimarama Training School, that gentleman had said that it would be desirable to appoint a corporato body with a properly defined trust for dealing with these bequests. He had furthor said that in the local Government proposals which it was intended to bring down next tcssion provision would probably be made for a pound-for-pound contribution by the Government to the local revenue of tho above mentioned institutions. Therefore, if the Committee now decided to appropriate their portion of the bequest, .they would place themselves out of reach of such a contribution.—After some discussion it wbb proposed by Mr Mackecknie, "That a Select Committee be appointed to draw up a scheme for permanently disposing of the legacies, as suggested in the letter of the 23rd October."—Mr Bull thought a I small portion of tho legacy might be appropriated for the preparation of plans for a desirable enlargement of of Hospital and Refuge.—Mr Uando suggested that application should be made for the temporary use of the Council's Smallpox Hospital. The Mayor said that he had thought it a desirable place for placing some of the invalid children in. The matter of the Small-pox Hospital had been referred by the Council to a Committee, which had not yet reported.—After some furthor discussion Mr Mackcchnie's motion was passed, and The Mayor, Messrs Clark and Hull, and the mover, appointed the Committee referred to.

DIsrENSER, Etc.—The appointment of Mr Young, ward-porter, as dispenser, was confirmed, and the appointment of a suitable person to fill his place as wardporter was left in tho hands of tbe Mayor and Miss Crispc. Miscellaneous.—Tho supply of sundry conveniences, at a cost of £28, was authorised, and the decision of site for mortuary was deferred.—lt was agreed to hold the next meeting at 0.30 a.m. at the Hospital. —The Chairman announced that Mr and Mrs Walters had withdrawn their resignations as master and matron of the Refuge.— It was resolved to allow thorn 10 per cent, upon the sale of piga reared at the Refuge, and to make some necessary repairs.—The Mayor was deputed to make inquiries with respect to the desirability of procuring an automatic regulator of gas supply. — A letter was received from Mr Firth resigning bis position as a trustee of the Costley bequcste.—lt was resolved to hand over the letter to the gentleman's co-trustees. —The current accounts having been approved, the meeting dissolved.
