A SorrosED Madman.-William John Hamilton waa brought up under the \agrant Act charged with using profano language and creating a disturbance in St. Matthew* Schoolroom onSunday afternoon, the 24th inst.Prisbner pleaded not goiHy.-Sergoaut Kiely denosod that prisoner had been conducting Mmsolf in a Teiy singular manner in the puhlfc streets during the past week. Yesterday afternoon he wont to the Salvation Army Baw«-?*nd wauled to " hold forth." The officers did not wish to prosecute him, and cased him away. Prisoner then went towards St. jfatthow'a, and with a companion entered the Sunday-school and commenced using indecent iangumre.—Frederick Wright, senior, teacher, deposed to Ithc concuct of the prisoner ar.d his < ompanion. A Drunken Trio.—Charles K. Connop, Henry Naylor. and Georgo Cook were charged with home drunk and disorderly at Newmarket on 'Saturday night.—Constable Thomas Graham described thesoono, which was very ludicrous. Queen -street. Knew prisoner. He engaged him.on the 15th October, and he continued in .'his employment until the time of hia arrest. Ho was junior salesman, and assisted in carryIng out parcels. He received 25s a week, About 11) days after he entered the service, he (witness) missed 6 pairs of silk stocks, value 6s 6d each. Made a strict search, but failed to find thorn, —Detective Walker called at the shop. Resumed such and missed 70 yards of black Bilk in two pieces, 4 piects of Maltese laceabout 35 yards—also 10 pairs ladios' gloves. Had not mado an accurate account of the value of the goods. On the 15th inst., lie called prisoner into Ms office and charged him with having stolen property. Prisoner denied it Called in Uetectlve Walker, prisoner appeared terrified, confess •<!, and gave up the keys of his boxes. He lodged in Wctoria-atreot, youod a large quantity of goods, whioh be identified as the property of the firm. Prisom-r was present. The goods were removed to the Polico Station;. went with the detective to Mrs Kmery's, Hobson-street; found there several pairs of gloves, Maltese lace, 2 whi;o feathera, t dozen njwels, etc. On the 18th in-t. he Received a, letfcrf from prisoner. Had not found all the missing goods. — Louise Kmery, .wife of.Thomas Emery, joiner, deposed that; B've kept a fruit shop in Hobson-stroet. About', the Ist inst., prisoner called at her ahnp, and de-; sired her to purchoso sonan lace and gloves from him. She bouiht 15 yards, o pairs gloveß.a.oilk ■carf.o pair silk stookiuKS, Gave him" 10s for srldvos, 12s stockings, 10s for 2doz. towels. Left the/eathera with tier until lie called again. Handed tbo things %i the police.— Ueorgtoa Westlako, sii gle, deposed that Bho was Dsrmaid at the Nevada Hotel, Know prisoner by sight. . He was at the hotel on or about tue 12th inst. He gave Jier a piece of muslin and a pair of Josephines. Ho asked her as a favour to accept of them. She said, " Yes, certainly." [Here the prisoner hung down his bead, and shaded his face with his hand ] She save the articles to Detective Walker.—Jane Mason deposed that she was single, and barmaid at che Nevada Hotel. Had seen prisoner at tbo jiotel. He presented a piece of muslin and a oajr of brown kid glove 3. She accepted them.— Petaotive Walker gave evidence as to the arrest ot prisoner, and discovering the property abovo noted.—The depositions wcro then roaa over, and the prisoner fully committed. The second Charge againftfio prisoner was stealing goods, #alue 15s, on the 15th inst, the .property of "iV. H. Dampier, and the third, larceny of goods. onvthe lath, value. £11 11s, fhe property of ISamJiel Coombei. These cases were proceeding 'as we went to press.
