A number of Maoris were -/'. playing football, putting the stone, etc., ' entering with great heartiness into these amusements. Wending our way among the raupo wliares, and among large numbers <of ': women and children, some of them in ' costumes of the scantiest character, A''A. wo were shown To Whiti's whare, and i % on entering found the prophet amid.:-"■ I an assemblage .of about forty natives ' v: at their mid-day meal—Wi Parata being; >• amongst the number, also Mahuki, the native who tied up Mr Hursthouse.oTe o - Whiti greeted Major Parris as an old friend in a cordial manner, as indeed did all the natives wo met, men and women. The visit waa j. urely a friendly one, no speeches * being made either by Major Parris or, Te ' Whiti. Subsequently we'entered extent occupied by Tohu, the same cordial wet- "A come being given. Food and tea wer^pre-; pared before us in To Whiti's whare, of . ! which wo partook.
