MUNICIPALITY ELECTION
CoxwinEitAßLK Interest is boirig manifested tQjday throughout Ponsonby in tho polling for the return of a gentleman to fill the scat at the City Council vacated by tho resignation of Mr. J. Dacre. Messrs. J. It, Upton, W. J. Dalton, and K. Cooper arc tho candidates, and for more than ton days jiast their respective partiwins have been making a very active canvass of tho district. There seems to bo no question of principles involved, the claims of tho rival wooers of the suffrages of "tho free and independent" appearing meroly to rest upon their personal merits. Frem tht first Mr. Upton him scomod to be the favourite, but Mr. Dalton'a friends mako a Btrong appeal on his behalf by virtue of his professional skill and exporienco aaan engineer, and his intimate acquaintance with the want* of the Ponsonby district. All parties aro working with onorgy and good tempor, and cabs aro flying about here, there nnd everywhere in thoir intorcst?, while the votors show a commendable appreciation of tho value of the franchise by assembling in largo numbers at tho polling-booth to record their votes. It U encouraging to find that the distinction of serving the public in the City Council is held in such high regard as to be eagerly contested. Timo wan, and not so long ago either, when seats in tho Municipal Parliament metaphorically went a-besrging. The present content indicates the higher vnluo now attached to tho honours and dignity of a City Councillor.

The Secretary of tho Auckland Riflo Aapociation rocontly wrote to tho Secretary of the Now South Wales Rifio Association to ascertain what encouragement would be offered for tho visit of a local toatn of riflomeo. He has now received a reply stating that tho New South Wales Association had only sent an invitation for a New Zealand team, and that no inducements in tho way of concessions could bo hold out, as their rulo hod been that visiting toams should pay their own expenses. A visiting team would camp od the rifle range, where tents would be provided for. Should any representatives of the Auckland Volunteers visit Sydney during the match they could bo admitted members of the N.S.W. Association on the same terms as other Volunteers, which would entitle them to compete in about five matches. Tho Council will meet on the 4th of July, when the letter will be laid before them. The local Secretary also wrote to Sydney re the procural of Martini-Henry rifles, but Colonel Reader informs him there are none in stock, and that the Government are not prepared to buy any for Rifle Associations.
